University of Louisville Campus Entry

Orcutt | Winslow collaborated with the University of Louisville and landscape architect QK4 to conceptualize a captivating design for an entry gateway and streetscape enhancements along Warnock Street. The entrance showcases a timeless, gently curving brick and limestone site wall, proudly etched with the words ‘University of Louisville’ on the limestone surface. The wall is accentuated by layers of carefully selected landscaping, progressively increasing in height to create an inviting visual experience. The crosswalks and intersection logo are artfully incorporated through embedded pavement stenciling, seamlessly integrating functionality with aesthetics.

Thoughtfully planned landscaped medians complement the improved lane striping and turn lanes, ensuring ease of navigation. Both sides of Warnock Street are adorned with new sidewalks, featuring charming brick paver accents. Enhancing the ambiance are decorative pole lights adorned with banners, casting a warm glow and further elevating the street’s visual appeal. Just west of Floyd Street, the design explores the possibility of a donor recognition installation, envisioning a low brick wall adorned with exquisite limestone donor medallions and coping. An elegant, black-painted steel structure supports clear glass panels with frosted text and graphics, tastefully trimmed with frames of vibrant red aluminum.

This collaborative effort created a welcoming and visually striking gateway that showcases the university’s pride and commitment to excellence. The design incorporated a harmonious blend of durable materials, artistic elements, and functional considerations, resulting in a streetscape that not only enhances the campus environment, but also fosters a sense of community and engagement.
