Laveen ESD Black Box Theatre

Laveen Elementary School District commenced a new district-wide identification program for each of their schools. At Trailside Elementary, architects found opportunity to fulfill the requirement of adding the necessary performance space and also help brand the campus as a performing arts school. The existing and aging conditions of the campus required that the new addition stand out in design and materials with a deliberate change to what was already there. The vision of the simple black cube elevated with a glow of light underneath it to give the appearance that it was floating. This emerged symbolically this as the performing arts program slightly elevated above everything else, showing its importance to the rest of the campus.
