A World-Class Wellness Facility

Arizona State University Health Services Building

Tempe, AZ

Arizona State University grew from 23,400 in 1968 to its current enrollment of 60,000+, making ASU the largest university in the country. Nothing had changed at the Student Health Center during that time. As patient volumes and service demands increased, the facility structure became an impediment to health care delivery, increasing wait times, reducing patient throughput, and dissatisfying patients and staff alike. In 2010, the University committed to a 9,000 SF expansion of the facility with the help of Orcutt | Winslow and Lake|Flato Architects. The design concept for the ASU Health Services Building envisions an inviting destination for students, one that creates a sense of wellness and health within an efficient, functional and timeless design.

The facility draws upon best practice strategies within today’s experienced markets through the implementation of concierge locations/services, electronic and social networking alerts, personalized sequencing and hospitality-driven operation and efficiencies. A central concierge desk welcomes and directs patients to their respective clinics, and acts as a wayfinding node to both traditional and alternative treatment spaces. This high volume space is flooded with natural light and provides venues for wellness and healthy living information in both digital and print form. The ASU Student Health Center is now a world-class wellness facility that creates a new and unique place on campus that complements the historic context surrounding it while functionally fulfilling the current and future health needs of students.
